The School and College Ability Test (SCAT) is one of the most common ways to qualify for Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY). What makes it unusual — and what surprises most families — is that it's an above-grade-level test by design.

What “above grade level” means

The SCAT measures a student against material one to several grade levels ahead of their current grade. Elementary students take questions written for middle-school material; middle-school students take questions at a high-school level. The point isn't to test what a child has been taught this year — it's to reveal advanced reasoning ability.

The test has two sections — Verbal (analogies) and Quantitative (number and math comparisons) — and each is scored on a scaled range. CTY publishes the qualifying scores it looks for by grade band.
